The rise, the hiatus, and the return: After a period away from the spotlight, Astley staged a major comeback with his album 50 in 2016, which charted at No. 1. His more recent album, Are We There Yet? (2023), also saw chart success.

Rick Astley has frequently spoken about his career, from his initial success to his comeback, often reflecting on his love for music and the experience of touring with a mix of gratitude and humor.

On leaving and returning to music

"I just fell out love with the music business, not music." Astley explained his mid-career departure from the spotlight by stating that his disillusionment was with the industry, not with performing or creating music itself.

"It's just part of my DNA, I like doing it and I'm still the same with that. I don't think that's ever left me." Speaking on his eventual return, he emphasized that his passion for music never faded, even during his long break.

On the experience of touring and performing live

"You can't explain the feeling of singing hit songs to an audience—it's like being a genuine sports star at the peak of their powers." Astley has likened the adrenaline of a live performance to the excitement of a top athlete.

"Without my old songs and without the Rickrolling thing... I wouldn't have got the invite for Glastonbury." He is highly grateful for the unexpected second life of his 1987 hit "Never Gonna Give You Up," which has brought him new opportunities and audiences.

"I do get to sneak in a new song every now and again when no-one's looking, but without the back story, I wouldn't be there." He acknowledges that his famous older songs are what get him in the door, allowing him the chance to play his newer material.

"Performing now is comfortable." With age, he has gained a different perspective on fame and is now more relaxed and confident on stage.

"...the minute someone plugs a guitar in, I'm right back to being a kid." Despite feeling his age sometimes, he still feels the same childhood excitement for music when performing.

On connecting with his audience

"An audience is an audience—they come to hear music..." Astley believes that the core experience of connecting with an audience remains the same, despite the dramatic changes in the music industry since his early career.

"I'm at a point now where, if I make a new record, I can actually play the new songs and everybody doesn't go to the bathroom." He humorously noted the positive shift in his fans' reception of his new material, appreciating that his comeback audiences are there to hear more than just the classics.
