Released in June 2000, Anastacia's debut album Not That Kind launched her onto the global stage with its unique blend of pop, soul, funk, and dance music. The album showcased her powerful and distinctive alto voice, helping to redefine the pop landscape of the early 2000s.

Background

Before releasing her debut album, Anastacia spent years as a backup vocalist and dancer. Frustrated by being told her voice didn't fit into any one category, she auditioned for the MTV talent show The Cut in 1998, where her performance of "Not That Kind" caught the attention of record labels. She was signed to Daylight Records, an imprint of Sony Music's Epic Records.

Success and impact

The album was a major commercial success, particularly in Europe and Oceania. It reached the top 10 in charts across eight European and Asian countries.

It sold over five million copies worldwide by 2006.

In recognition of her success, Anastacia won the World's Best Selling New Female Pop Artist award at the 2001 World Music Awards.

Hit singles

The album featured several successful singles, including:

"I'm Outta Love": This lead single was a global hit, reaching number one in Australia, Belgium, and New Zealand, and the top 10 in Germany, the UK, and several other European countries.

"Not That Kind": The title track was also successful, charting in the top 20 across Europe and reaching number 11 in the UK.

"Cowboys & Kisses": This soulful, country-tinged track performed well in Europe, reaching the top 40 in several countries.

"Made for Lovin' You": The album's final single was a moderate hit, charting in the top 30 in the UK.

On the Not That Kind 25th anniversary tour

Anastacia expressed her excitement to be back on tour in Europe, calling her fans her "very special family". She noted that this tour is particularly special because she didn't get to tour for the original album release.

She commented on the passage of time since "Not That Kind" came out and promised to celebrate "in true Anastacia style," describing it as "one big anniversary party".

Returning to Wembley feels like "coming full circle," and she looks forward to celebrating the songs with her long-time fans.

For Anastacia, the tour is "really about music" and celebrating with her audience, many of whom haven't seen her live before, which she views as a positive "starting over".

On the legacy of the Not That Kind album

Anastacia shared that she didn't fully appreciate her unique voice until later in her career, initially feeling it wasn't the "right voice" because it didn't sound like Celine Dion or Madonna, but rather more like Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner.

She commented on the initial reaction to her voice, noting that despite being a "white girl," she had a strong "soul" quality she couldn't explain.

Anastacia thanked everyone who has "danced, cried, or sang their heart out to these songs".

Reflecting on the album's beginnings 25 years ago, she mentioned having "just a dream, tinted glasses, and a whole lotta soul," not knowing what the future held.
