Album highlights
Charts and recognition: The album peaked at number 6 on the UK Albums Chart. It also made history by becoming the inaugural number-one album in the UK's Official Folk Album Charts.
Key tracks: A major hit from the album is "Weekend In Paradise," which was certified Gold by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) in 2023. The track is seen as a relatable anthem for the working class. Other standout tracks include the raw and empathetic "Out On The Street" and the title track, "We Get By".
Lyrical themes: The album reflects a range of emotions and themes, from the daily struggles of life to social commentary. Songs like "Something's Gotta Give" and "Common People" touch on disillusionment, while "This Place" is a heartfelt tribute to his hometown. Webster's earnest and direct storytelling resonated strongly with listeners.
Musical style: While the acoustic tour will feature stripped-back versions, the original album incorporates a blend of rock, folk, and indie influences, showcasing both high-energy tracks and more mellow, laid-back songs.
Critical reception: Music publications praised the album, noting its classic yet modern sound and Webster's ability to craft tracks that feel anthemic. He was celebrated for his ability to write catchy, repeatable songs with meaningful, relatable lyrics
In a 2020 interview with TotalNtertainment, Jamie Webster provided a concise summary of his debut album, We Get By.
"To describe the album, it documents and asks questions of the struggles, joys, and escapes of everyday working-class life. A few chords, a bit of passion, and a lot of the truth".
Further context on We Get By
A "love letter" to Liverpool: In a separate interview with YM Liverpool, Webster described the album as an effort to reflect working-class life. The album documents the struggles, escapes, and joys of working-class life... It's massively important that working-class people have a voice in the industry.
Inspired by real life: Speaking to This Feeling, Webster explained that his music is meant to be relatable to working-class people across the UK, not just in Liverpool. He said he wants to bring as many people as possible together, through shared experiences.
Capturing a feeling: Reflecting on the impact of his music, Webster told YM Liverpool that he hopes to bring people to a "nicer place" and help them "escape their troubles for an hour or two". He noted that this is particularly effective when lyrics are "real".
