When describing her album Eternal Sunshine, Ariana Grande has referred to it as a "concept album" that features "different heightened pieces of the same story, of the same experience".

Key points and notable quotes from Grande about the album:

Thematically personal but artistic: According to an interview with Zach Sang, the album is personal and emotional, and also serves as an artistic "costume to wear." This allowed Grande to find inspiration from many sources. She deliberately crafted lyrics that were both "very vague and very specific—all at once".

Balancing vulnerability and playfulness: The record covers a wide emotional range, from "really vulnerable" to more "fun and playful tracks," sometimes with an ironic tone.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind connection: The album's title and theme were inspired by the 2004 film of the same name. Speaking to Zane Lowe, Grande said she was drawn to the movie because of the irony in its message. The concept of erasing memories to feel "eternal sunshine" is "beautiful, and it is what we wish for everyone," but "it's also—the irony of it was what drew me to it".

Avoiding a "f—k you" tone: Despite the heartbreak discussed on the album, Grande insisted that a key message she wanted to convey was kindness and love. She told Zach Sang, "It wasn't like a 'f—k you,' at all... even at the hardest moments of the loss and the grief... there was so much love and transparency". She also told Zane Lowe, "I don't need to pretend that you're a monster to make peace with this ending".

No pre-release singles (after the first): After releasing "yes, and?" as the lead single, Grande decided not to drop any more songs before the album. She wanted listeners to "experience [it] in full this time" so it could be heard as one complete body of work.
