Thematically personal but artistic: According to an interview with Zach Sang, the album is personal and emotional, and also serves as an artistic "costume to wear." This allowed Grande to find inspiration from many sources. She deliberately crafted lyrics that were both "very vague and very specific—all at once".

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind connection: The album's title and theme were inspired by the 2004 film of the same name.
